Our Romantic Weekend in Marrakech: Souks, Spices & Sunset Views

48 Hours in Marrakech: My Fun , Fast Guide to Enjoying The Red City

Morocco has always been at the TOP of my bucket list ” places to travel” . Ever since I read a captivating mystery novel set in Tangier, Morocco, I’ve been fascinated by its allure. Winding streets leading into souks , the delectable smells of spices  and old-world intrigue that made me dream of seeing it for myself one day. From where we are in northern Italy Ryan Air  has direct flights from Treviso Airport. It’s wild how in three hours we’re in Morocco and it truly feels like another world. We went on the first weekend in July. Insanely hot but still enjoyable . Our Riad had a beautiful rooftop pool , perfect for a refresh after getting up early to explore the souks and before going out again to see the incredible sunset over Jemaa el-Fna square. What is a Riad and how do I choose from the hundreds in the city ? What kind of food is there , how should I dress, what are some cool fun things to do in such a short time and is it worth it to only go for a weekend ? I’m going to share our itinerary and some tips for a fantastic weekend in Marrakech that will give you a taste of what this beautiful chaotic city has to offer..

Where We Stayed, and Where to Eat Delicious Food In Marrakech

A Riad is your best choice for staying in the center of Marrakech . They are smaller hotels with 4 or 6 rooms and have an interior courtyard with a small fountain . This Riad we booked was so peaceful and beautifully decorated! Our flight arrived into Marrakech at 1 am and the ride coming AND going back to the airport was an adventure ! I communicated with Sam ( our riad manager ) and asked him to book our transportation to and from the airport.. While it didn’t save us time from the adventure perspective of it most riad owners will give your taxi or driver precise directions because I’m telling you it’s a labyrinth in the medina and you will find yourself lost in the maze. On foot OR in a taxi .. It can be funny but also stressful especially if you have a flight to catch and it’s dark out … As our taxi made it’s way into the center the streets at almost 2 am were lit up with the brightest lights and music playing from all directions. I seriously thought we were caught up in some kind of festival but no our driver said this is typical Marrakech on a Saturday night ! So much to see , hear and feel , complete sensory overload !

Good Morning Marrakech !

The next morning we took a walk at around 8 am to check out our neighborhood. I still get so freaking excited waking up in a new country ! Just a few hours before the streets were so pumped up and alive and now it was cool and calm . The only noises we heard were from a few bakeries that locals came to buy freshly baked bread for the weekend and the meows of baby kittens . So many baby kittens were tucked away in tiny cardboard boxes on the small residential streets . They had food so I wondered if this was from the shopkeepers or locals. I’ll never know … No trendy coffee shops here , in fact there wasn’t one coffee shop open on our street . Not to worry because  breakfast was prepared and waiting for us back at our riad and it was the fresh mint tea that woke me up! Wow , I’ve never had such fresh , delicious mint tea . I love mint and it was a compliment to the fresh fruits , dates , bread and butter we had for breakfast . Sam, the riad manager was from Essaouria which is on the coast and will be our next trip to Morocco ! He gave us some wonderful suggestions for things to do and I’ve said it so many times but connecting with people who love to share their hospitality is truly my favorite part of traveling.

It was now time to venture out and see the souks.  This took us right into Jemaa el-Fna square .. It’s only 10 am so not really amped up .. yet.. Seeing this square transform from day to night is quite the experience ! This is the most touristy area of Marrakech and your senses are going to be (perhaps) overstimulated with all that’s going on . I learned really fast NOT to make eye contact and to keep my purse and hands close to me . I say hands because if you decide to touch or pick up anything to get a closer look or curiosity gets the better of you a vendor will engage you in bartering . Alberto enjoys this process and I’d rather pay and go about my shopping BUT haggling is part of the fun . For whom though ! Pretty sure I’m getting ripped off to some degree , but we did purchase two beautiful coats unique to Morocco and we walked away happy.

Even before the bazar opened I was lost!

You can find a mix of everything for sale here . Trinkets, Rugs, blankets and cushions. Vendors from juice stalls shouting at you to try their fresh juices (welcoming in the intense dusty heat!) and cobras ! The second I heard the sound of the Pungi I knew we would see them. Then there were small monkeys chained around their necks..  A friend of mine made the mistake of stopping where the cobras were and as quick as lightning a monkey was on his shoulder , a photo taken and then the demand for money ! He paid the 20 Euro to avoid the confrontation but be extra aware of your surroundings here..

After you’ve spent a few hours weaving in and out of the souks , getting lost , passing the same stall 100 times , and  haggling you’re going to be HUNGRY and I’ve got the perfect spot for lunch …

Stunning smells of spices in the souk

Delicious Food and Drinks in Marrakech

Our first meal after breakfast was at Mechoui Alley

Mechoui Alley in Marrakech is a not so hidden ( Anthony Bourdain filmed an episode  here) culinary gem tucked just off the bustling Jemaa el-Fnaa, known for its slow-roasted lamb cooked in underground clay ovens. The scent of smoky spices fills the air as vendors carve tender, melt-in-your-mouth mechoui right in front of you. It’s rustic, authentic, and wonderfully chaotic—one of those unforgettable food experiences that captures the true soul of Marrakech. I’m not a big meat eater and not fond of lamb so we ordered the beef. The most tender spiced meat I’ve ever had with soft bread for sopping up that meat juice ! If any dish was going to change my mind about eating meat , its this one …

For dinner we went to sahbisahbi

Dinner at Sahbi Sahbi in Marrakech felt like stepping into a world of refined warmth and feminine elegance. The soft lighting, handcrafted decor, and intimate atmosphere created the perfect setting for a romantic evening. Each dish was beautifully prepared in the tajin rooted in Moroccan tradition yet elevated with modern touches—making every bite feel sweet , savory and the perfect amount of spices. Sharing this meal with Alberto felt indulgent, slow, and deeply connected. We sat around the open kitchen and I think this is an excellent option for women – solo travelers and solo diners. Safe , and so inviting .

SAHBI SAHBI

One of the top places in Marrakech is Nomad

Located the heart of the old medina, we had lunch our second afternoon in Marrakech then dinner on our last evening on the rooftop. It’s an escape from the hustle and bustle below , the view is spectacular and the call to prayer bellowing out over the city sounds meditative and calming .  Spread over four levels with two terrace floors, dining inside or on the terrace are equally wonderful experiences.

Inside, Nomad serves creative, contemporary takes on Moroccan cuisine — seasonal ingredients, inventive flavor combinations, and plenty of choices for vegetarians and pescetarians. The vibe is relaxed and chic.

Now We Drink …

If cocktails aren’t your thing skip ahead but we love a good cocktail ! We found a fantastic spot Here

Beautifully decorated , incredible ambiance , and the most delicious cocktails  ( I LOVED the Jimmi Hendrix) made by the friendliest barman and staff. We also checked out The Royal Mansour

This stunning Hotel – property is truly breathtaking . If you want to spend your time in Marrakech dipped in gold (not literally but it’s oh so rich!) then this is the place . We took a lovely stroll and tour of the grounds , hotel , and shops . The staff were very kind and friendly so we didn’t feel TOO intimidated walking among all the opulence . The small intimate bar beckoned us so we had aperitivo and enjoyed every minute in this stunning palace . I mean place! It’s worth a stop and stroll and sip if you’ve got the time …

Now We Do!

Visiting the YSL Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech was the most serene moment of our trip. We arrived right when they opened, and it was absolutely worth the early start — the gardens were calm, the paths quiet, and we had space to truly take in the vivid cobalt blue, exotic plants, and the artistic legacy of Yves Saint Laurent.  The soft morning light just makes everything feel even more magical. If you’re planning a visit, make a reservation online ahead of time; spots fill quickly, and timed entry keeps the experience peaceful. Wandering through this iconic garden in the cool morning air was the perfect way to begin our last day in Marrakech. We bought the BEST peppermint tea I’ve ever had in the gift shoppe and stayed for breakfast . Yes they have a cafe with a made to order hot breakfast and it’s delicious !

Top Tips For Traveling To Marrakech

1. Dress respectfully and comfortably.
Marrakech is modern yet conservative, so lightweight clothing that covers shoulders and knees is ideal—especially when visiting religious sites.

2. Book major attractions in advance.
Places like Jardin Majorelle, the YSL Museum, and Palais Bahia sell out quickly. Reserve online to save time and avoid long lines. We booked the FIRST time slot at 8 am for the Jardin and it was SO worth it.

3. Stay inside or near the Medina.
You’ll be closest to the souks, restaurants, and major sights. Riads offer an authentic and charming stay.

4. Be prepared to haggle.
Negotiating is part of the culture in the souks. Start with half the asking price and enjoy the playful back-and-forth. BUT be respectful.

5. Use small bills and carry cash.
Many stall vendors don’t take cards, and ATMs can charge high withdrawal fees.

6. Arrange airport transfers beforehand.
Taxis at the airport can be unpredictable with pricing. Pre-booked transport makes arrival smooth and stress-free. Ask your Riad they are usually willing to help with transportation .

7. Expect the medina to be bustling.
The alleys are lively and maze-like. Download an offline map and don’t be afraid to wander—you’ll discover hidden gems along the way. I wish I could have filmed more but I wanted to be respectful and there was so much to take in!

8. Hydrate and take breaks.
Marrakech can get very hot. Drink bottled water, stop for fresh mint tea, and enjoy rooftop terraces for shade. I always bring a scarf and tissues – wet wipes  for this reason too .

9. Be mindful around Jemaa el-Fnaa.
It’s fascinating but can be overwhelming. Avoid taking photos of performers or animals unless you want to pay.

10. Embrace the experience.
Marrakech thrives on sensory overload—colorful spice stalls, call to prayer echoing through the medina, lantern-lit dinners. Let yourself take it all in.

Our whirlwind 48 hours in Marrakech was a sensory dream—filled with color, flavor, and unforgettable moments that made the city feel both thrilling and deeply welcoming. From wandering the lively souks to savoring romantic dinners together  discovering hidden corners of culture and beauty, every hour left us wanting more. Marrakech captured our heart quickly, and I know this won’t be our last visit. I hope this guide inspires you to plan your own weekend escape to this magical city—and when you do, let its vibrant energy sweep you away, just as it did for us.
