Exploring Cagliari, Sardinia: A Travel Guide

Visiting Sardinia, Italy: Beaches, Food, and Culture in the capitol Cagliari

Cagliari, Sardinia’s charming capital, is where history, culture, and coastal beauty collide. From the winding streets of the Castello district perched above the city to the vibrant markets and sun-kissed beaches below, Cagliari has a rhythm all its own.  I’m always captivated by the blend of ancient architecture, colorful piazzas, and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. Cagliari is the perfect starting point for exploring Sardinia’s rich heritage and stunning landscapes. Whether wandering cobblestone streets, tasting fresh local seafood, or admiring panoramic views from historic bastions, Cagliari offers a travel experience that’s both relaxed and endlessly inspiring.

Sardinia is truly a mediterranean paradise where dazzling turquoise waters meet rugged coastlines. The beaches alone are some of the most breathtaking I’ve ever seen, but what struck me just as deeply was the richness of Sardinian food and culture, a blend of tradition and hospitality. Wandering through the island, I became fascinated by the nuraghi — ancient stone towers scattered across the landscape, silent yet powerful reminders of Sardinia’s mysterious past. This island isn’t just a place to visit; it’s an experience that lingers with you long after you leave. We’ve made three trips to Sardinia and wanted to share some of my tips and experiences that made our trips wonderful !

Top Beaches Near Cagliari, Sardinia

Chia Beach (Spiaggia di Chia) – Just a short drive from Cagliari, Chia is famous for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, soft white sand, and dramatic sand dunes. It’s perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and capturing those iconic Mediterranean postcard views.  I have this weird obsession with the Nuraghe and my sweet husband took me up to the one in Chia . Next time I would like to see the Barumini Complex  I hear it’s impressive . We also saw flamingos here in Chia!

Tuerredda Beach – Nestled between Capo Malfatano and Capo Spartivento, Tuerredda feels like a slice of paradise. Its calm, shallow waters and hidden coves make it ideal for families or anyone looking to enjoy a peaceful day by the sea.

Poetto Beach – Closer to the city, Poetto is Cagliari’s urban beach, stretching over 8 km. It’s lively, full of cafes and beach bars, and a great spot to experience local beach culture, especially if you want a taste of Sardinian city life alongside the sand and sea.  Le Palmette is a beach club we frequently visit

A Taste of Sardinia: Food and Wine
Traditional Dishes You Must Try (porceddu, culurgiones, fregola)

Luigi Pomata

Is the only restaurant that’s open since we last visited in 2022.

We tend to also pop into an Enoteca (italian cheese , meat and wine shop) and grab cheese, meat and wine to take with us as we head out to the beach for the entire afternoon. I cooked Culurgiones. Culurgiones are traditional Sardinian stuffed pasta, typically filled with potatoes, cheese, and mint, offering a delicious taste of the island’s culinary heritage.

The sun is unreal and I always come back so bronzed! Summer may be over but Sardegna is less than an hour flight away so I may have to find a weekend to explore more Nuraghe !  XO Tera
