Honeymooning Through the Storm
Even though our honeymoon in Cabo San Lucas was bursting with sunshine and romance, it took an unforgettable twist when Tropical Storm Lidia rolled in back in 2017. Lidia brought torrential rain, winds up to about 65 mph (105 km/h), flash flooding, and dark skies that loomed over what normally would’ve been perfect beach days.
For us, it meant swapping some poolside lounging for snacking on tortilla chips in our room , watching the storm crash outside, feeling the power of nature, and laughing together at the unexpected. That contrast of chaos and calm made our time there all the more memorable — reminding me that adventure isn’t just in the perfect moments, but also when things don’t go according to plan.
Rain doesn’t trigger sleep or relaxation in me , especially the sound of wind. So the worst case scenario for me would be a hurricane! We just had our wedding in Tuscany June 3rd. August was our month to travel , so I took my husband to meet my mother in Las Vegas then being spontaneous we decided to have our honeymoon . We had one week before we fly back to Italy from Vegas so let’s go to Mexico! It’s close, let’s do it!
Where we stayed and ate in Cabo San Lucas
Arriving to Cabo was easy, booking a taxi to your place is an adventure . The driver asks us all the usual questions like ‘where are we from, is it our first time” to which I reply “oh we are on our honeymoon!”. “You didn’t see the news”? “Oh you guys gonna have a lot of fun!” he says winking. I just think he’s making some kind of small talk but yea, we were in for a good time. We stayed in downtown Cabo at The Bungalows The owners were incredible! It was family owned by a lovely Brother and sister who greeted us with the warmest hospitality. Our suite was beautiful. They cooked us a full delicious breakfast every morning and had a nice offering of delicious snacks and tequila all day. There’s a big beautiful pool and the location is an easy 15 minute walk to the fishing dock, shops, and great dining options. I can’t recommended this place enough if you’re going to Cabo.
What we did before the storm !
We had a beautiful sunny second day in Cabo so we decided to check out downtown . We did some shopping around the pier, had a margarita at Cabo Wabo Cantina and enjoyed some sunbathing – swimming at the beach .
It was after beach yoga and some swimming that we decided to have some tuna tartare , chocolate churros and margaritas at this beautiful beachfront restaurant when all of the sudden waiters start shutting windows, and moving tables inside. They move us in but say “no it’s ok don’t worry!’, “you can eat ,drink, we will make sure you have a beautiful dinner, these hurricanes are nothing for us! Say what. Well as you can see from our pictures, yes Lidia was sneaking up on us. We ate, drank and had a nice dinner but when it came time to walk back? That was fun! So much water had flooded the city, driving wasn’t possible. We were still damp from the beach and wearing sandals. NOT the best footwear in this scenario!
We had no power, wifi, or running water. It was impossible to go out to eat even with sanitation being an issue and flooding. We ventured out the night before our flight and ended up at one of the few open bars called Squid Row. with a lot of randoms floating around Cabo like, college kids, tourists, expats. You could say it was a nice mix of Uptown and downtown.
A Cabo San Lucas Honeymoon We’ll Never Forget
The morning we were set to leave we said goodbye to our hosts who were so kind. It’s not an easy business hospitality but our hotel went above and beyond those days for us and each guest. I can’t say enough wonderful things about how well they treated us. We shared a taxi to the airport with a couple from Texas who were also celebrating their anniversary of twenty years and were hoping that their home in AZ was ok because Lidia managed to flood parts of CA and AZ.
Alberto and I weathered the storm and it’s another trip, another adventure, another thing that brings us closer but also reminds me to be grateful and stay humble. It wasn’t the honeymoon we expected, but it became the story we’ll tell forever. XO Tera
